Best Cities

A while ago I was looking at some discussion of "best city to live in" or something like that. All kinds of people expressed their preferences, instancing considerations such as weather, restaurants, nature trails, etc. Yet the thing that really affects one's view of a place is surely the fate encountered there. Supposing you lived in some town and, in the space of a few years, you found a good job there, got married, had a child. You would probably have fond memories of that place. Then, let us say, you moved to an equally good place, except your new boss turned out to be a loathsome, self-doubting wretch who had to undermine your work, and then your wife started drinking, burnt the house down and then left you, discreetly conveying to all your friends that the whole business was somehow your fault. I would think this is a fairly common sequence of events. So how would you feel about that place now?
