Loser's Guide to Life
At Eli's Multi Medium you'll find a remarkable photograph of a window display of Betty Boop collectabilia in some shop in New York. The lighting on the big Betty's face is extraordinary. I don't find the picture creepy, though, more intense and introspective. The stance of the big Betty is dramatic: she is almost, but not quite, attending to the bizarre moustached dog on a serving dish, her back resolutely turned on her lesser incarnations. A look of guilt and incipient defiance is glimpsed in the shadows on her faceif that is indeed her face. De profundis clamavi ad te, she might be saying.
