Gosh, I Must Have Nothing to Do
If you think about it, the term homo sapiens could reasonably be translated as "man the feinschmecker". Sapere in Latin also means "to sense, or appreciate" something, and that's where words like saveur and sapore come from.
Words which mean "to know" are quite interesting and complicated. Some of them straddle an area that includes "to have observed" and "to understand", and their usage is often quite specific.
