Guns 'n' Books

A letter in the TLS from Campaign Against Arms Trade complains about the fact that publishing giant Reed Elsevier is also busy hosting arms trade fairs:

Last September the Book Fair’s own venue, London’s ExCel Centre, hosted Reed Exhibitions’ crown jewel: Defence Systems and Equipment International (DSEi), Europe’s largest arms fair. On offer at DSEi was weaponry ranging from small arms, the cause of an estimated 500,000 deaths each year, to tanks and cluster bombs.

But people shouldn't be too surprised about that.

What would be disturbing is if you were to discover that your favourite perfumes and deodorants were produced by some company that also made nerve gas. It's easy to see how someone might get all upset at the idea. But there would be no real danger probably.
