Listen to Me! I Don't Know Anything!

An interesting note on Mr Kenneth Pollack: he doesn't actually know anything about the Middle East. That's to say, he understands little Arabic and no Persian. In itself it's not so important, but it's something you need to get under your belt before you can be much of an expert on a region.

Atrios adds:

The real issue is that Ken Pollack helped lead us into war in Iraq. If I'd been that person I'd have crawled under my bed and not come out for a few years. If I'd been in charge of a media outlet I wouldn't have let him near a press/camera.

This wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't emblematic of everything that goes on now. The Plame affair: nobody needs intelligence about Iran. Investigating Hussein's actual armaments: not important. Osama bin Laden: old hat. Things to be done in Afghanistan: not worth talking about. Iraq: cross that bridge later. On the other hand, there seems to be a lot of effort spent on producing drivel in the hopes that it will keep everyone's mind off of things that they've no right to be thinking about.
