I was looking at an old edition of some British novel the other day, trying to determine when it was published, as there was no imprint date. Interestingly, though, the cover bore the legend "Compliments of the Hotel Taft, New York", next to a drawing of what I took to be the hotel. Inside there was some more information: "Hotel Taft. Adjoining the Roxy Theatre, 7th Ave. at 50th St., New York City. Managed and operated by Bing & Bing, Inc."
Those were the days. The serious entrepreneur would hand out complimentary novels.
While looking for more information about the Bings I discovered this "New York Songlines" site, a virtual walking tour.
