Loser's Guide to Life
For a while I was at work on the archive of B——, the noted writer, philanthropist and statesman. The material was vast. His publications took up shelf upon shelf of a lonely warehouse; reprints of his birthday odes to the Queen alone filled two hogsheads.
And leafing through his marginalia and personal letters I came to know the human side of the man. The notes to his familiars were appreciated and found properly endearing. After working on this archive for several years, I began to wonder if there was ever a bigger idiot, or a more despicable public figure in our history. I doubt it, but records were made to be broken.
