Not many people know this, but long before the field work for which he is noted, Dr No wrote a short essay called “Non-negative Lack of Response in Some Ergative Languages” that caused quite a stir in negative circles. It was published in Non, at that time the leading organ of denial and contradiction. He then founded the avant-garde !=, which brought important non-texts to the attention of the public.
