Loser's Guide to Life
People are always complaining about TV and movies. “Why do they put this stuff on? Who watches it?” I have to wonder too sometimes. “Designer Inc.” “Dog the Bounty Hunter”. “Entourage”. Trying to imagine the potential viewer, I come up with an impossible composite of a person who is rich, in debt, very active, impotent, surfeited, childishly ignorant yet curious about everything, devoted in equal measure to Walt Disney and the Marquis de Sade. They're working out, they're planning a cruise, they're setting their ovens at 375, they're using fresh herbs if they're available, and now they're having a pizza pocket. All this while watching TV, of course, which is the main thing.
So, as Roland Vejinas-Monoloque has noted, ultimately TV is a message that we are sending ourselves, and it says “you are watching TV.”
