I think for a lot of people it might be a relief to find that, yes, the jerks were right all along. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and so on. There are probably people at this moment, taking their yellow alligator out for a walk or directing insane little movies, who are secretly comforted by the knowledge that they could easily slip into normal mode and start making easy payments.

However, there are different types of conformity. It's a rich and varied feast, and I don't think writers have surveyed this. In fact, there could be just as many ways of conforming as there are of not doing so. In some sense it's an even bigger problem than the other thing.
