Hiring and Firing

Everybody is saying that Stéphane Dion should quit because the Liberals did so poorly in the election. But is that a good idea?

I think it would be counterproductive, because the whole exercise showed that Dion is the only functioning module in the party and the rest of them are not. So what should happen is everyone in the Liberal party except Dion looks around for some other thing to do, something more commensurate with their etc. Let Dion stay and try to salvage something.

I'm not sure who's actually responsible for the day-to-day running of a big political party, but I don't think it's the people who appear to be in charge. I'm not suggesting it's a secret league or something, but a lot of the governance might be informal. There are people with considerable influence who don't actually have jobs that occupy a spot on the old flowchart.

I suppose the problem there is that having no job, they can't actualy be “fired”. In fact, they do the firing, no doubt. They're probably sitting around now, mulling over Dion's fate. I bet they even have a stupid nickname for him, like “The Egghead” or “Professeur Tournesol”.
