That's That

The conservatives managed to retain a minority, which was to be expected. It's not really anything to get excited about, but...

I have to say, it's a mystery who keeps voting for them. Who are these people? What motivates them?

I think to account for that non-insignificant number of voters, it must be a grab-bag of patriots, libertarians, management types and traditionalists of one stamp or another. In other words, it's mostly attitude that keeps conservatives in power.

Here is an admirably restrained summary of yesterday's election events from Stageleft:

So Stephen Harper declared it impossible to work in a minority government, sharing power with Stephan Dion, Jack Layton, and Gilles Duceppe.
Roughly $200 million dollars later, he has succeeded in establishing a minority government, sharing power with Stephan Dion, Jack Layton, and Gilles Duceppe.

I assume they thought that things will only get worse for them, so why not have an election now?
