Siberian Roundup

1. “Lefty” from Irkutsk intends constucting some shoes for a cockroach. Mr Viktor Bazhenov has made other unusual footwear, big, small, etc. But what he really wants to do is make tiny boots for a cockroach or perhaps a cricket. The smallest shoe he has made so far measured one millimetre. “I had to get some glasses”, he says, cackling away madly. (“Lefty” in the title refers to a master craftsman in Leskov's story “The Tale of Cross-eyed Lefty from Tula and the Steel Flea”.)

2. People ought to try bulz—a Carpathian treat. Baked balls of cornmeal porridge containing butter and bryndza. Bryndza is a bit like feta, but with butter in it. It's a good way to eat lots of butter, if you need to do that.
