Poor Writing

CNN.com talks about President Carter's approval of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Syria. But there was a negative reaction to this visit, as CNN reports:

The simple act of visiting the country and capitalizing on a photo opportunity could undermine the Bush administration's effort to isolate Syria for its behavior, according to

Oh, oh, interesting, according to whom? Because that's a bold statement.

Ken Pollack...

But we've discussed this before, I believe: Ken Pollack doesn't know anything. So it's the same as writing “according to my bum”, i.e., not worth talking about.

Siberian Roundup

1. “Lefty” from Irkutsk intends constucting some shoes for a cockroach. Mr Viktor Bazhenov has made other unusual footwear, big, small, etc. But what he really wants to do is make tiny boots for a cockroach or perhaps a cricket. The smallest shoe he has made so far measured one millimetre. “I had to get some glasses”, he says, cackling away madly. (“Lefty” in the title refers to a master craftsman in Leskov's story “The Tale of Cross-eyed Lefty from Tula and the Steel Flea”.)

2. People ought to try bulz—a Carpathian treat. Baked balls of cornmeal porridge containing butter and bryndza. Bryndza is a bit like feta, but with butter in it. It's a good way to eat lots of butter, if you need to do that.
